Okay, nice mice. I need your help. I am notoriously impatient. Who has good tricks for very very very long plane rides? (Multiple ones! Overnight! Redeye!)
Eye mask, non-hurting ear plugs, slippers, pashmina, neck pillow, food you packed yourself, iPod with happy quiet beach or thunderstorm sounds, your favorite book from the fifth grade.
Slippers, for sure. Your own snacks. A couple quicky and easy books to read. I definitely recommend Melatonin (check side effects on this first though) or Nyquil to help you sleep. Best wishes on your travels!
I've done that flight, nothing much helped. Bring warm socks though, your feet will swell. And This American Life on ipod is probably good too. And bring the Long Walk To Freedom. You'll have the endless plane ride to freedom to read it on.
You will come back a bit changed if you do things right. And if you don't go to the District Six Museum and them drive around District Six afterwards, you'll have me to answer to!!
1) Before leaving for the airport I eat a big, filling meal. 2) I wear a hooded sweatshirt. 3) I bring along an eye mask and ipod with my favorite relaxing classical music on it. 4) I hydrate, hydrate, hydrate. 5) I take an ambien right before boarding the plane. 6) Then I change my watch to the time of my destination and don't ever think about the time difference. 7) I get on the plane, pull up my hood around my head, put on the eye-mask, snap on the cello music, and voila! I'm asleep.
Oh, and when you are on your layover force yourself to walk around the airport for half an hour. It really helps to move when you can!
I fly back and forth from Hong Kong to the States every three months, and it's not much fun.
However, the best advice is just to sleep the whole time. Don't sleep much the night before the flight, work out the day of the flight. Don't have any caffeine once you're on the plane, drink lots of water, etc.
I have nothing to add to the above except moral support. I loathe long plane rides and am dreading our flights to the US in May. I will be stacking the ipod and thinking happy thoughts. Oh and avoid alcohol if you can.
12 nibbles:
Eye mask, non-hurting ear plugs, slippers, pashmina, neck pillow, food you packed yourself, iPod with happy quiet beach or thunderstorm sounds, your favorite book from the fifth grade.
Vicodin.
iPod packed with good stories. [and maybe some vicodin]
Um, Xanax. That's all I've got. Sorry.

Ambien is useful, plus your own snacks, music, etc. Enjoy!
Tranquillisers.
Failing that Harry Potter on audiobook on an ipod, maybe a few Harry Potters, depending on the length of the flight.
This is my fool proof method:
1) Before leaving for the airport I eat a big, filling meal.
2) I wear a hooded sweatshirt.
3) I bring along an eye mask and ipod with my favorite relaxing classical music on it.
4) I hydrate, hydrate, hydrate.

All perfect suggestions. May I also throw in loads of moisturizer so you don't arrive in Jo'burg looking like 20 years your senior...
Sudokus/crosswords are good if that's your thang. And watch at least two in-flight movies if you can.
Silicone earplugs for swimming are the best - they are very soundproof-y, and gentle on the ears.
Bon voyage!
